TECHNICAL CREW

POSITION LIST

Crew positions may be added, altered, or removed upon release of the final crew list at Mr. Spillman’s discretion. Please contact Isaac Spillman at ispillman@zcs.k12.in.us with any questions about specific positions or crew in general.

 

CREW LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

 

Technical Director

The student technical director works closely with the staff director and staff technical director to coordinate all technical crew members in regard to the production and ensuring that every crew member is fulfilling their duties. The technical director will provide creative input in the set, sound, lighting, and projection design process for the show. The technical director oversees all other student leadership positions. The tech director shall coordinate set construction timeline and tasks with the stage manager and assistant stage manager. The technical director is responsible for calling the show cues over the intercom during rehearsals and production. The technical director should be a student who has already participated in technical crew on one or more previous musical productions.

 

Stage Manager

The stage manager coordinates crew members involved in all traditional technical theatre roles for the show (all stage positions, lighting, projections), and is responsible for maintaining knowledge of all positions to give direction to crew members as needed to help them learn and fulfill their duties. The stage manager shall work with the technical director and assistant stage manager to create call sheets to schedule crew as needed for all rehearsals and other production days. The stage manager shall work with the technical director to ensure safe and efficient crew procedures during rehearsals and production. The stage manager shall be responsible for coordinating crew efforts to clean and disinfect set pieces, properties, and other items as needed. The stage manager should be a student who has already participated in technical crew on one or more previous musical productions. 

 

Producer

The producer coordinates crew members involved in non-traditional technical theatre positions for the show, including audio and video recording/editing. The producer shall supervise filming documentation (call sheets, shot list, etc.), and manage the logistical aspects of the show.

 

Director of Photography

The director of photography shall work with the technical director and post-production coordinator to oversee the camera crew for the filming production. The director of photography shall oversee filming operations such as shot selection and camera settings. The director of photography shall be familiar with all camera equipment used during production and will work with staff operate the main camera during the filming process. The director of photography shall work with the technical director create the shot list for final inclusion within the show.

 

Projectionist/Qlab Operator

The projectionist is responsible for the playback of audio, video, and lighting cues through Qlab during the production. The projectionist shall work closely with the staff to program the Qlab show file as needed. During rehearsals and filming, the projectionist shall follow the script to fire cues on time. The projectionist will coordinate with the technical director and stage crew to ensure accurate video and images are projected during production.

 

Light Board Operator

The light board operator works closely with the technical director and staff members to operate the lighting console during rehearsals and production. During production, the light board operator will work with the technical director and post-production coordinator during filming to ensure the lighting is adequate on video.

 

Audio Engineer

The audio engineer works closely with the technical director and staff members to operate the sound console during rehearsals and productions. The audio engineer is responsible for monitoring piano and staff playback volume during all stage rehearsals. The audio engineer will assist with the operation of the soundboard during the audio recording process. The audio engineer is responsible for monitoring the sound board during the playback of tracks during filming. 

 

Documentarian

The documentarian shall document the entire rehearsal and production process through the recording of photo and video content. After the conclusion of the filming of the show, the documentarian will edit those photos and videos for inclusion with the release of the show as bonus content. The documentarian should be a student with experience in videography and photography.

 

 

GENERAL CREW POSITIONS

 

Assistant Stage Manager

The assistant stage manager shall assist the stage manager and technical director with tasks including (but not limited to) the creation of call sheets for rehearsals, taking attendance of crew members, maintaining a clean and orderly backstage area, construction of set pieces, cleaning equipment after use, and other tasks as needed. 

 

Properties Manager

The properties manager works closely with the assistant stage manager and is responsible for the organization, distribution, and cleaning of all props used in the show.

 

Stagehand

Stagehands shall assist with set construction, the movement of set pieces backstage during rehearsal and production, and other tasks as needed.

 

Rigging Operator

The rigging operators shall operate the rigging system during the show to fly battens in and out as necessary.

 

Followspot Operator

The followspot operator shall operate followspots during rehearsals and production. 

 

Camera Operator

The camera operators shall operate a manual camera during the filming of the show.

 

Robocam Operator

The robocam operator shall work with the staff and director of photography to record and recall positions for the robocams during the filming process for the show.

 

Publicist

The publicist works closely with the technical director and documentarian to create digital and print media promotions to advertise the show. 

 

Assistant Projectionist

Assists the projectionist with tasks as needed.

 

Assistant Light Board Operator

Assists the light board operator with tasks as needed.

 

Assistant Audio Engineer

Assists the audio engineer with tasks as needed. The assistant audio engineer shall coordinate audio equipment on stage.

 

Assistant Producer

Assists the producer with managing equipment, organizing equipment before and afterwards, manages digital storage equipment for the production. 

 

Video Switcher Operator

The video switcher operator shall operate the video switcher during filming to switch to shots outlined in the shot list.
